Diabetes has hidden dangers that begin before diagnosis and continue to worsen if certain steps are not taken to prevent the complications that are the true, “killers” in terms of diabetes. According to the statistics, there are millions of diabetics all over the world, both Type 1 and Type 2. One of the best ways to prevent diabetes is to go for routine tests and health checkups. These tests will help you diagnose the problem at their very onset in order to prevent complications and to provide effective treatment.

Below we are listing six important diabetes tests that you must not ignore:

1. Blood tests for Diabetes

A1C Test– The HbA1C test, also known as a glycated hemoglobin test is undoubtedly the best way to determine the blood sugar levels in the body over a period of time. This test is done without fasting and estimates the blood sugar level.

Fasting blood sugar (FBS) test- This test can be conducted after overnight fasting. A person must fast for 8-12 hours before they go for this test.

Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)- It is a 2-hour test that helps in finding out how your body processes glucose.

Random blood sugar test- This test can be done at any time of the day and does not require fasting.

2. Blood Pressure

As diabetes and hypertension can occur simultaneously, this increases your chances of getting a stroke or heart attack. It is really important to get your blood pressure level checked from time to time.  A diabetic person should maintain the blood pressure level between 140 mmHg systolic (upper) and 90 mmHg diastolic (lower).

3. Lipid Profile

Not many people know this, but diabetics are more prone to getting heart diseases. This is the reason why they must have a blood test for lipids like LDL, HDL, cholesterol, and triglycerides checked as a part of their annual checkup. Consult a doctor if your lipid levels are high.

4. Eye Examination

In some cases, high blood sugar level also leads to microvascular damage. So, it is highly recommended that you go through a diabetic eye exam once in a year. Also, check for early diabetes complications.

5. Kidney Function Tests

These tests are basically done to check if your kidneys are functioning well or not. In this test, the doctor checks the ratio of microalbumin and creatinine. You must get this test done once a year to check if your kidney is functioning the way they should.

6. Electrocardiogram (ECG)

This test is really essential for all those people who are over 50 years of age. Make sure your doctor conducts electrocardiogram in your routine medical tests. Remember, it is hard to find the symptoms of heart problem, especially if somebody is suffering from diabetes.

If you want to enjoy an illness-free life, make sure you enjoy a healthy life and maintain a balanced diet and get these tests done to start timely treatment.
